Traditional CSA Pickup Locations

How CSA Pickup Works

Dates:

  • First 2021 CSA Pickup is the first week of June.

  • Final 2021 CSA Pickup is the first week of November.

Our Farm Share Pick Up is self-serve:

  • Members must check off their names on the sign-in sheet (very important!).

  • Please note it is the responsibility of each member to make sure you are receiving the proper share.

  • Vegetable Shares come packed in boxes or wooden crates. They are labeled by share size. Members should bring their own bag to the pickup site and unpack the contents of their share. Then, they should stack the crate or flatten the box and put them with the other empty or folded boxes or crates.

  • We cannot reuse boxes once they have left the pickup location. Please do not take any wooden crates from the pick up location.

  • The Swap Table: There will be a box with a few vegetable items in it at the pick up location. This is intended to leave something you don’t like and take something you would rather have. We will leave items here to begin the swap.

  • If there are ever any questions on the day of pick up, we encourage you to please give us a call. We will give our cell numbers to help trouble shoot on pick up day if there is confusion.

How do I know what’s in my share each week?

Each week we craft your Farm Share to include a diversity of seasonal vegetables. Two days before the pick up day, we will email you a Newsletter with the list of vegetables along with descriptions and cooking tips.  This helps our members plan their menus and additional shopping accordingly.  However, we ask members to please keep in mind that this is a pre-harvest list.  The harvest plan sometimes changes in the fields and so too can the share contents.  We do not send out a post-harvest list with changes unless the changes are significant.

Which share is right for me?

We offer three share sizes, small, medium and large.

The small is perfect for an individual, a small family, or a family that cooks one to two times a week.

The medium share is perfect for a family that likes to cook three to four times a week.

The large share is perfect for a family that likes to cook five to seven times a week.

When does the CSA start?

Spring/Summer Shares start the first week of June.

TUES (6/1) WED (6/2) THURS (6/3) FRI (6/4)

Fall/Winter Shares begin the second week of November.

TUES (11/2) WED (11/3) THURS (11/4) FRI (11/5)

What is the best way to contact the farm about my share?

It’s best to contact us at info@whocooksforyoufarm.com.  We will, also, give our cell phone number out to all registered members so they can contact us on the day of their pick up.

How do I pay for my CSA farm share?

A down payment is due at the time of registration.

Payments can be made online through our website.  You can pay with a credit card. We accept all major brands except American Express. Soon you may, also, pay with an e-check or ACH.  Here you will enter your Bank routing number and account number for a direct a withdraw payment. (We are in the process of setting this up.) In the meantime or anytime a paper check is also an acceptable form of payment.

Are payment plans available for CSA farm shares?

Yes. We have several payment plans available.  The goal is for the share to be paid in full before you start receiving any vegetables, so once the share is dispersed you are home free enjoying the season with no more worries about payments. We offer a payment plan of 5 payments, 2 payments and a one time payment in full.  We are, also, looking to continue with Kretschmann’s legendary Agricultural Supported Community Shares, as well.  These you can buy to donate to those who want to join but do not have the funds to do so.  We are currently working out this system and hope to have it up and running a few weeks after sign ups begins. More News on this soon!

Can I change my CSA share type &/or pick up location?

Yes.  If you would like to change your Vegetable Share Size, you may do so.  If you choose to downgrade your share size, we will refund you for the difference in the share price going forward on shares not yet received, or you may choose to receive a credit that can be used to order bulk tomatoes, peppers, etc. If you are uncertain about the best share size for your household, we encourage members to purchase smaller shares to start.  If, as the season progresses, you find yourself wanting a larger share, you are more than welcome to upgrade at any time and we will prorate the balance. If you need a change to your share please email us.

Yes.  You can change your pick up location by logging into your member account or by emailing the farmers.

Can I share a CSA?

Yes.  This is a popular option and nice to do with a neighbor or friend, either meeting up at the pick up site for a weekly friend date or alternating weekly pickups.  One person will sign up as the primary member and then you will enter the contact information for the person you are sharing with as the secondary member.  You will need to add their name, address, phone and email.  This way both of you will get all the weekly emails.

What happens if I need to cancel my CSA share? Do you offer refunds?

When you purchase a CSA, you are making a commitment to our farm for one growing season.  However, there are situations that arise in which a member may need to cancel a share, like serious illness, an unexpected move, loss of a job, etc. If you are in these circumstances please be in touch and we will be able to refund you for all orders yet to be received minus a $50 fee within 30 days of cancelation. If you need to cancel before the season begins in June, you will receive a refund minus a processing & handling fee of $50 within 30 days of cancelation.

What if I’m running late or am unexpectedly unable to pick up my share or what if I forget that it’s csa day?

If you arrive after the pick up window it’s entirely up to the host at this point.  We will, however, do everything we can to try & save that share for you!   Please call our cell phone number as soon as you suspect you’ll be late or miss your pick up.

Do you guarantee certain vegetables for the farm share?

No.  Because of the nature of farming, we do not guarantee any crop.  What we do guarantee is diversity, honesty, integrity & quality.  We never compromise our growing practices and we will do everything in our farming power to bring you the seasonal favorites!

We grow about 50 different crops and with each crop we grow several different varieties.  Planting different varietals gives us some safety measures between climate and stresses that kill plants.  We plant multiple successions of many of these varieties to ensure that we can provide a diverse harvest every week.  This diversity is a reliable crop insurance for our members.

Because each season has its own unique weather conditions,  one crop may be better one year than the next.  Due to the inherent risks in farming, there is always the threat of a natural disaster.

What if I’m going on vacation & can’t pick up my share?

  1. You can always have a friend pick up your share.

  2. You can donate your share.

  3. You can, also, schedule a “hold” on your share and receive a double pick up the following week.  We realize that you may have a very busy schedule and we, also, know that it is summer vacation season.  You can use up to 3 “double shares” during the season to make up for missed weeks.  You can schedule a pickup hold or double share by logging into your member account or by emailing the farmers.

What if I have no idea what to do with the veggies in my share?

We’re here for you!  Part of the whole CSA experience is learning how to eat locally and seasonally.  This means trying new foods as they come into season.  We offer a few ways to help:

  • Recipes:  Every week we create an original recipe specially catered to your share.  We try to include simple ingredients making the recipe one that our CSA members can easily cook at home.

  • Cooking tips: We share general cooking tips for each kind of vegetable offered in our share.  This way, members can gain basic cooking knowledge without needing to stick to a given recipe.

  • Storage tips: Our produce is harvested just days or the day before you receive your share.  It is the freshest produce available! If stored correctly in your home, your produce will show remarkable shelf-life!  We offer our members storage tips to ensure premium quality.

  • We encourage communication!  Never hesitate to send an email or pick up the phone to call if you have any questions about a vegetable and how to use it.  Food…it’s what we do!

Can I send a friend to pick up my share?

Sure! You don’t need to contact us about this.  Please give written instructions to your friend about signing in and putting boxes away etc. I assure that if you do not write down what your friend is supposed to do for a smooth pickup, a mistake will be made and we will all be scrambling around trying to fix it.

Can I request more or less or none of an item?

No. We do not customize boxes.  This is where the SWAP BOX comes into play.  If you don’t like something, we recommend swapping it out.  If you have diet restrictions we recommend ordering from our Online Market instead of signing up for a Traditional CSA. With the Online Market, you can customize your vegetable box AND will need to be picked up at the Saturday Bloomfield Farmers Market or Sunday Squirrel Hill Farmers Market.

Pittsburgh is incredibly lucky to have this farm. Chris and Aeros are true stewards of the land. They are incredibly thoughtful when choosing management techniques for their fields and operate with the highest level of integrity. I have been eating their produce from their CSA, Farmers' Markets, and at the various restaurants they supply for over 7 years. Simply the best!
