Summer 2026 Week 18 Newsletter

Howdy Folks,

The Autumnal Equinox happened this, Tuesday September 22, @ 8:04pm.

At this specific moment in the Northern Hemisphere there is balance at the axis of the earth, we are neither tilted more towards or away from the sun at this moment, making day and night time nearly equal in length.  This day marks the official beginning of Autumn!

At this time we begin to say goodbye to our favorite summer fruits, as the light is waning so is their ability to continue fruiting.  This week and maybe next will be our last weeks with Artisan and Roma tomatoes, okra, and husk cherries. The basil will be in its hay day until the temperatures dip into the low 40’s and the cold turns their beautiful shiny green leaves to black matte overnight.  So make your pestos and sauces now while everything is providing their last push of fruitful nourishing gems.  Luckily we still have a lot of peppers that are happy, so we should be able to bask in the glory of these delightful sweet fruits for a bit more into autumn.  These past three years, we have been able to have peppers until Thanksgiving, by providing them with a blanket of row cover to keep them a little cozy on the cooler autumn nights.  Let's hope for this again this coming season.

May our intentions and actions continue to bring you delicious and nutritious food into the late Autumn.  It is our intentions and actions that matter more and more these days.  All of us!  Thank you hosts for being spokes in the wheel for our food distribution to the greater Pittsburgh community, and CSA members thank you for signing on the red clipboard and reading your box labels to help omit pick up location errors.  Your effort is appreciated. We are all a living piece of the Mother Earth puzzle.
