Spring 2026 Week 1 Newsletter

Happy Earth Day week! 2026 here we come!  Welcome to any new comers to Who Cooks, and welcome back you lifers, or returnies.  This spring has brought us the opportunity to get a great foothold on the season.  The weather has been cold enough, warm enough, and wet enough.  We have had good timing with direct seeding to be lucky enough to already have carrots directed seeded and already sprouting in the field and one cultivation under our belt in these beds.  Our storage crops held beautifully through the cold winter, so you are getting some of these fruits of labor from last fall’s excellent harvest of beets, carrots, and sweet potatoes.  They say the healthier the veg going into storage the longer it can store.

We have 3 500’ x 30’ hoophouses planted with produce to feed our spring CSA and early farmers markets.  These hoophouses are stupendous! We no longer ever worry about them getting frost damage!  A major sigh of relief after years off stress and worry with our early plantings being in the field under floating row cover.  I think the stress that Chris and I took on with these field plantings over the years, definitely took years off our life.  But no more!  These huge 500’ x 30’ tunnels have amazing heat retention!  So all of the hot sun yesterday, and all the sunny days of spring warming the soil has provided the opportunity to warm the soil and the warms stays  in there, and this amazing biodome, simulating a warmer atmosphere.  This is what makes our early plantings of spring greens, scallions, and roots super happy.  These structures allow us to bring you fresh amazingly delicious veggies sooner than would be possible out in the field.  Note all of these plants are still planted directly in the soil and drink our spring water through drip line irrigation.

We were able to get away for a holiday break this winter to the Yucatan Peninsula, of Mexico.  The whole family enjoyed the sun, swimming, and fresh, fish, fruits and veggies.  We learned that most of the produce we were eating was grown in Campeche, so this is where we plan to head to next winter, to investigate the planting that’s going on down there.  A family favorite was swimming in the Cenotes.  They are amazing underground pools, natural sinkholes of fresh water that are unique to this area of Mexico, created from the impact of the meteor that took out the dinosaurs.  Amazing, crystal clear waters!  Some 20’ deep others hundreds!

Always eager for a new season, we prepare for the worst and hope for the best.  We have been trying to find a new box truck and having quite a hard time to get one.  We decided to go gas instead of diesel.  There are a few reasons here, mainly DEF fluid regeneration engine errors that we experience in both of our current diesel trucks, and yes you got it the price of diesel is through the roof!  So luckily we just secured a loan on a new truck that we found a couple of weeks ago!  Things just sometimes come together at what feels like the last minute and yet perfect timing.  So a big sigh of relief here as our new CSA season begins.

On the note of the present times:  We are in the food not bombs club.  I can’t write a newsletter and not mention the state of the union at such a time as this.  We know that the world is uncertain and it’s important to be very conscious of money in these times.  So we have taken this into consideration and want you to  know we have opened up the option for the CSA to be pay as you go; into weekly payments.  So if you know someone who hasn’t signed up because of finances, or if this would be a good switch for you to make, please let us know or also any friends so that they too can continue to get good food. We do not intend for our business model to keep anyone from joining the CSA, so this seems like a no-brainer option for us to offer, and luckily our CSA software has this as an option.

Here is a little glimpse of your farm staff.  Of course you have to have a picture of the farm owners living it up on our winter break in the crystal clear waters of Bacalar, Mexico, in southern Quanta Roo.

Next we have on farm pics of the crew, From top to bottom, Oso, Jose Antonio, Klinton, Diego, Andres, Sabryn, and Ping (Aeros' mum).
