Spring 2026 Week 2 Newsletter

Sun with blue skies and then grey with clouds! These days the breeze blows with a sweet odor of Autumn Olive blooms, which is a weed shrub in our parts. They produce a small edible red berry covered in silver speckles, with a fair amount of seeds. They are on the sweet side, but not super sweet. No smell at all but also in full bloom right now are the pussy toes and red trillium, so many others as well, but this is all I have pictures of. Also the wind has a lot wishing on the landscape at the moment with the field edges covered in dandelions going to seed.

We have had a freeze scare and then a couple of frost scares, so we’ve got the field plantings covered in row cover! Chris is even double layering the strawberries. It’s so sad when their beautiful, perfect flowers are turned black from the low temperatures burning the blossoms, aborting any berry from the bloom. We are preparing for more freezing temperatures this Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The row cover is here and the metal hoops that keep the floating row cover from laying on the plants arrived this morning! Perfect timing!

Busy days now as our plant sale pre-orders are happening next week and this Saturday, May 2nd is our first Bloomfield Farmers Market. Then, next weekend on Sunday May 10th will be the first Squirrel Hill Market.

Note: If you ever want more food in your box, You can add on to your order! Simply click on your CSA order, then click “Continue Shopping” in the top right of the shopping cart. It will create a separate additional order that we will add to your box, or put in another box if the order size requires it.
