Fall CSA Newsletter: November 12, 2024 (Week 1)
Hi Folks,
We did our final harvest of sweet peppers in this super mild November weather and wowsers! Did we harvest a bunch! A mild November, like this one, really opens the door to continued harvests of fresh vegetables...I mean its kind of crazy. Typical chilly November nights can easily reach the teens which beets (ha!) up anything that's sticking its head above ground....so carrots are safe...
This is why we grow so much produce in early spring and late fall in high tunnels. It's relatively safe in the tunnels from the deep cold snaps that damage and kill plants. In order to provide beautiful lettuces, spinach, and kale late in fall, they all need to be protected.
But at the moment, we aren't too concerned about a wicked cold snap. We're taking full advantage of the mild weather because everything is still growing!!
Anyways, half of our crew has retired for the season and are enjoying their family time. Which means we have half a crew to get a lot of beautiful produce harvested, washed, and packed for all of you. I know it sounds exciting and believe me it is. These days it is something beautiful to be harvesting produce on a sunny day when the weather is so nice.
Cheers,
Chris, Aeros & The Who Crew
You can see where the peppers were covered and where they weren't by the color of the plants! The brown plants were burned by the frost, but the green plants were covered and are still happy and healthy. Although this next cold spell they are most likely going to stop ripening, as they need the heat to ripen.
A frosty autumn sunrise over the barn. When the sunlight hits this tree, it makes the inside of the pack shed glow orange.
Checking the roots to see if they are nitrogen fixing.. looking good and healthy!
Cedar's 5 roosters on the hunt for a tasty snack. They are quite the gang these 5 free ranging roosters!
