Summer 2026 Week 12 Newsletter
Howdy Folks,
When it rains it pours, it just happened here. This was the third time since we moved to this farm in 2017 that the culvert at the bottom of the hill on our road has been clogged by debris coming down the hill in very heavy rains. This is the 2nd storm in two weeks where we have had flash flood warnings. 5 miles down the road two weeks ago they got what we just got today. 3-5’ in half an hour. ABSOLUTELY NUTS!!!
This is one of the topics I brought up to GT Thompson, when we were asked about what is up with farming. I noted that we are having more and more frequent storms with strong winds that Chris has nicknamed “Windfist”. The kind that slams against the house with a bang and a jolt! Then heavy rains in a short amount of time. If you believe that climate change is a hoax, I think you should spend more time outside. Ask anyone who works in or with Mother Nature, the realization of the changing weather is very apparent. Things aren’t the way they used to be even 20 years ago, let alone 10. Observation and making measures to endure existence is paramount. We will now make an even bigger swell around our pond and at the bottom of our lane we will request for the township to add another drain to go under the road the carry the water coming off the mountain down the mountain side. This is the 3rd time in 10 years we have witnessed this, so we need to have a better solution.
Chris, the boys and I enjoyed a very relaxing staycation for 3 days last week. It felt needed. We began to plan a get away and then we thought lets play at home, and catch up on cleaning. It was peaceful and we got in lots of giggles, made some delicious meals all ending in melon eating and we even got away to see the new Spiderman movie in a local theatre that just got brought back to life and we ate out! Fun!

Here Chris is filling in seeds with the walk behind seeder where seeds were washed out by heavy rain, with the company of his bestie Maca! We have many names for Maca; AKA Ma Girl, MOKER, she's the head honcho of the dogs! In case you don't know what Maca is, it's a Peruvian superfood, in the turnip family and only cultivated in the highlands of Peru. It's sold here in the US, in powder form.
Andres is discing under the onion beds in Vecino Field prepping the field to be sown with a special cover crop mix that will remain growing here through out the fall then die in the cold weather of the winter. It's soon to be sown with a mix of Oats, Field Peas, crimson clover, diakon radish, mustard greens, and millet.
This is a glimpse of our 3 day staycation! We swam with the kids every day in the pond. The kids always swim daily in the pond, but we usually don't get to enjoy the pond nearly as much as the kids or with them.
