Reminder about two on farm events happening yet this season, on Holiday Monday’s; Labor Day, September 7th 2-6pm & Native Peoples Day/ Columbus Day, October 12th 2-6pm. Both events will be potlucks and have a walking farm tour. If you want to attend Please fill out the brief google form here, this registration gives us an idea of how many folks are coming, and we can email you a list of other things to do in the area, a link with directions, and directions on where to park once you arrive at the farm, etc.
We do encourage you to bring a water bottle and to wear appropriate footwear to walk on uneven terrain.
The continuing rain and cool temperatures is not putting anyone in the Ag business in a good place at this time of year, especially since we have gotten used to August being hot and dry! We are struggling to keep up with weeds in the field, and also transplanting and direct seeding has been extremely difficult to keep on a timely schedule or planting at all. Standing water in the field is never a good sight, because you can’t plant into this. When the ground is saturated and there are only two cultivated crops that enjoy this condition that I know of, rice and watercress. The weather has put us behind and we are worried about our fall crops that are already out in the field and also worried about those that we have yet to get out and put into this season's unfavorable growing conditions. You win some, you lose some right! This is where we bank on diversity and inclusion. We plant a lot of different kinds of vegetables and work to feed the biology in the soil and therefore the plant, to create a strong foundation of immune health so that the plants can adapt and deal in unideal conditions. Just like the human body, keep building it up to deal with the wear and tear of any stress. Same. It’s the ongoing fight for the survival of the fittest, happens on a daily basis here and everywhere. Although it definitely feels very unfair sometimes. The concept of fairness feels very vague these days, like it’s an option only for the privileged.
